Meet Anita Anand: The Trailblazing Minister Shattering Glass Ceilings

Anita Anand may have become a household name when she was appointed as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2019, but her journey towards this milestone has been nothing short of groundbreaking. As the first woman of South Asian descent to hold a federal cabinet position, Anand has shattered glass ceilings and become an inspiration for women across the country.

Born in Kent, England, Anand moved to Canada after completing her education at both Oxford and Yale. She became a successful law professor at the University of Toronto, specializing in corporate governance and securities law. Her notable achievements include writing a book on shareholder activism and being named one of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine.

However, Anand’s impressive career took a new turn when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Oakville in 2019. A few months later, she was appointed as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, making her responsible for one of the largest government departments in Canada. Her portfolio includes managing government spending, overseeing federal infrastructure projects, and ensuring the ethical and cost-effective procurement of goods and services for the government.

Anand’s appointment as a federal minister has not only broken barriers for women in politics but has also brought diversity and representation
